Scali

Vandaag ben ik bezig om een factsheet te maken van Scali, die wijnen moeten hoognodig aan het grote publiek bekend gemaakt worden! Van Willie de Waal kreeg ik een stuk tekst uit Wine Spectator:

"In order to reach Willie and Tania de Waal at Scali Wines, I traveled along dusty, unpaved roads through Voor-Paardeberg. This small ward only got its designation in 2003, but with wineries such as Scali and next-door neighbor Sadie Family, you'll probably start hearing about it soon.
The Scali vineyards are planted on soils of granite and shale, and the farm itself has been owned by the de Waal family since 1877. Willie and Tania, 38 and 36, are the current owners, following Willie's father and grandfather. "We fell in love while blind-tasting as consumers," says Tania. They traveled to Burgundy, Australia and Italy to see how things were done before starting their own operation.
The de Waals began bottling their wines in 1999, when they stopped selling their fruit to the local co-op. They keep a small portion of their grapes for their own production and sell the rest to other wineries, including Rustenberg and Rupert & Rothschild. Production currently stands at 2,500 cases a year, with plans to grow to only about 4,000.
"We want to be small enough to handle everything ourselves," says Willie. "We like getting our hands dirty and falling off tanks," he adds with a wink, pointing to the bruise over his right eye.
Scali makes an exotic white—a rich, creamy, melon- and mineral-filled blend of Chenin Blanc, Chardonnay and Viognier—as well as an admirably good Pinotage that's loaded with raspberry and briar flavors. In addition, Scali produces a superb Syrah, which offers racy fruit, a silky texture and a long, minerally finish, showing that combination of New World fruit and Old World minerality that sets the top South African wines apart."
