2003 Tulbagh Mountain Vineyards Theta 93
This is 100% Syrah. A very pure, clean, crisp nose with blackberry, cassis, mulberry and minerals. Good definition and lift. The palate is full-bodied with excellent structure. Notes of blackberry leaf, blueberry and liquorices. Extremely well focused on the finish that has a vice-like grip on the finish. Great depth and penetration. Superb, but a real long-term wine that deserves cellaring. Drink 2012-2018. Tasted October 2007.
2006 Tulbagh Mountain Vineyards Syrah 92
Another outstanding Syrah from one of Swartland’s best producers. This is more expressive on the nose than the ’04, with great purity and lift, scents of game and leather to the fore, then accompanied by some melted dark chocolate. The palate is full-bodied, reminding me of a Northern-Rhône with plum, garrigue and dried herbs towards the persistent finish. Exellent stuff, with the depth to last. Drink now-2012. Tasted October 2007.
2004 Tulbagh Mountain Vineyards Syrah/Mourvedre 89
This is bursting with ripe black plums on the nose with blackberry and a touch of the old wine gums. The palate is quite chewy, perhaps “fluffy” with bloated blueberry and blackberry leading towards a tarry finish. Nice grip. Bit chunky, but clean focused finish. Drink now-2010. Tasted October 2007.
2005 Tulbagh Mountain Vineyards Viktoria 88
A blend of Syrah, Cinsault and Cabernet Sauvignon, this has an attractive gamey nose with plum and liquorice scents, not a million miles away from a Châteauneuf-du-Pape. The palate is full-bodied, just a little greenness underneath with a rich plum and liquorices-driven finish. Fine. Tasted October 2007.
